Divorce surge on Monday warns Gazette

Jo Spain, family law solicitor

It seems that you can't read a mainstream newspaper or news website without finding January's traditional annual news item about surging divorce figures following Christmas, this year given an extra boost by the credit crunch. Now even the Law Society Gazette is getting in on the action with its own divorce meets credit crunch story: "Family lawyers braced for surge in divorce cases" crys its headline.

The story predicts Monday 12th will be the highest point of the surge as it is "The first Monday after children return to school following Christmas ... traditionally the busiest day in the divorce lawyer’s calendar." and inevitably brings in the economy: "This year that day ... is expected to be especially busy as the economic slowdown ratchets up pressure on shaky marriages."

"Family lawyers are bracing themselves for what looks set to be a rush of couples starting divorce proceedings next week." says the Law Society Gazette; don't panic we say.

Rest assured we are not barricading ourselves into the office, but we will be retaining our normal calm, professional and measured service. So if you do feel inclined by your circumstances to contact us please do.

If you do want to book an appointment for early next week just send us an email over the weekend, and we'll keep an eye on our inbox on Saturday and Sunday and respond to you as soon as we can.

Have a calm weekend.
